In 1986, Athletic Director Lou Piccola and a large number of Xaverian students were interested in revitalizing the Clipper Swim Team.

Mr. Piccola asked Jim D’Ottavio if he would like to become the coach of the team, and the rest, as they say, is history.

On a Friday afternoon at New Utrecht High School, the Clipper Swim Team held it’s first tryouts with over 50 student/athletes showing up.  Since that day, the Clippers have always fielded large squads and have been competitive in their division.

For over three decades, the Clipper Team has developed into a group of athletes/alumni with great pride and tradition.  The team has seen Valedictorians, City Champions, State Meet Qualifiers and a City Record Holder.  Numerous Athletes have also had the honor of being recognized as NISCA Academic All Americans.

Dan Majikas (Head Varsity and Freshmen Coach)

2020—Present

Dan’s swimming experience comes from his position as Assistant Chief Lifeguard at Atlantic Beach.  Dan is new to coaching swimming, but brings 8 years of coaching experience to the Clippers.  He has been involved with coaching other Clipper athletes on both the JV Football and Lacrosse Teams.  He is excited to join the former coaches as the head of the Clipper team, and will be mentored by John Ward during the upcoming season.

Dylan Larkin ’12 (Assistant Freshmen and Varsity Coach—Head Diving Coach)

2016-Present

A Clipper Swimming Alumnist, Dylan joined the coaching staff in 2016.  Having been a diver during his tenure on the Clipper Team, he assumed the role of Head Diving Coach.  Dylan has mentored divers who have had little experience and has brought them to a level where they have been able to compete in the City Championships.  One of his divers has established new records that were set more than 20 years ago.

John Ward (Head Varsity and Freshmen Coach)

2007-2020

John started his coaching career back in 2007 as Head Freshmen Coach and assistant Varsity Coach.  He took over the head coaching position for Varsity at the start of the 2012 season.  John has been named CHSAA Coach of the year three times and has won several Divisional as well as “B” City Championships.  His athletes have qualified for State Championships, NISCA All American honors, and can be credited with setting various school records.
